Step 2: Select the target external hard drive and then click 'Turn on Bitlocker'.
Step 3: On the 'Choose How You Want To Unlock This Drive' window, please select 'Use a Password to Unlock This Drive'.
Step 4: Choose where you want to save the recovery key in case you forget your password.

How to Encrypt External Hard Drive with Renee File Protector
The first time you use Renee File Protector, you will be required to set your master password and the email address which can help you recover the password when you forget it.
Step 1: Launch Renee File Protector and click 'Lock File' in 'External Disk'. Then connect your external hard disk to computer.
Step 2: Click 'Lock Folder' on the right side and select the target folder in external hard drive.
Step 3: Set password for the target folder in external disk.
After selecting the folder(s), you need to set the password. Renee File Protector provides 2 password modes for external hard disk:

Step 4: After encrypting folders in external memory device.
After lock, a new file named '(original name of the folder).exe' will be created in the same place where the original folder was. Then the original folder will be deleted automatically.
Notice: Please do not delete or move the exe file. Any delete or move action may make you lose the way to regain access to the locked folder.

How to Unlock the Folder Permanently in External Hard Drive
Unlock in Other Computer (Without Renee File Protector)
Step 1: Double click the 'EXE' file and then enter the password you set in the pop up window.
After lock, it will create a new file named '(original name of the folder).exe'. Then the original folder will be deleted automatically. If you want to unlock folder permanently, please click this .exe file and then enter the password you set before in the pop up window.
Step 2: If you want to unlock the folder permanently, please click 'Unlock' in the floating window and confirm the operation after unlock.
If you have install Renee File Protector in the target computer, you can also unlock the folder with Renee File Protector.
①. Click 'Lock File' in 'External Disk'.

②. Select the target folder(s).
③. Click 'Unlock' button.
④. Enter the password you set.

When you format an internal or external storage device, you can encrypt and protect it with a password. If you encrypt an internal device, you must enter a password to access the device and its information. If you encrypt an external device, you must enter the password when you connect the device to your computer.

If you encrypt an external storage device, you can't connect it to an AirPort base station for Time Machine backups.
WARNING: To encrypt and protect the device with a password using Disk Utility, you must erase the device first. If the device contains files you want to save, be sure to copy them to another storage device or volume.
If the device contains any files you want to save, copy them to another storage device or volume.
In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, choose View > Show All Devices.
If Disk Utility isn't open, click the Launchpad icon in the Dock, type Disk Utility in the Search field, then click the Disk Utility icon .
In the sidebar, select the storage device you want to encrypt.
Click the Erase button in the toolbar.
Enter a name for the volume.
Click the Scheme pop-up menu, then choose GUID Partition Map.
Click the Format pop-up menu, then choose an encrypted file system format.
Enter and verify a password, then click Choose.
To change the password later, select the volume in the sidebar, then choose File > Change Password.
(Optional) If available, click Security Options, use the slider to choose how many times to write over the erased data, then click OK.
Secure erase options are available only for some types of storage devices. If the Security Options button is not available, you can't use Disk Utility to perform a secure erase on the storage device.
Click Erase, then click Done.
